Makeup Review: Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara

colossal There has been so much buzz about the new Maybelline mascara, Colossal Volum’ Express, that it’s really hard to ignore.  (It’s so new, in fact, that they don’t even have it on their official website.)  Why are people talking about it?  What makes it special?  The packaging?  The product?

I decided to get down to the nitty gritty, and I bought it.

You may recall a previous mascara review I did for Maybelline Define-A-Lash Volume Mascara and how I didn’t really like it.  Don’t worry, I’m not letting that alter my perspective of this new product.  I’m not that biased.

I bought the Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara, in Glam Black at Walgreens.  All the tags said it cost $6.99, which I imagine is the regular retail price.  After I went through the line and paid for everything, the bill seemed a little low.  Apparently the mascara rang up at $4.99.  Hmmm…a magical secret deal!  The best kind.

Anyway, let’s get down to business.

colossaleye Pros: The packaging is just adorable.  It’s this plump, bright yellow plastic thing with purple accents.  Although the packaging has nothing to do with how well the product works, you got to admit that it makes a difference in your purchasing decision.  Admit it!

Besides that, I really did like how this worked.  The wand was the fattest mascara applicator I’ve ever seen.  I was almost afraid it was too big to actually work, but I was wrong.  It worked very well.  One swipe of the mascara wand and I was ready to go.

Although this is supposed to be all about the volume, this mascara seemed to curl my lashes more than normal.  Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that!  As you can see in the picture to the left, my lashes look huge.

Cons: Honestly, there aren’t many cons.  The smell is a bit strong.  It sort of smells like dirt and lilacs.  Personally, I don’t want my mascara to smell like anything.

Also, there was a bit of flaking toward the end of the day.  While the product works well, it doesn’t really stay well.  Granted, I have seen a lot worse when it comes to mascaras, though.  And you have to keep in mind that this isn’t a waterproof mascara.

So, taking the pros and cons into consideration, what grade do I give it?  Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara gets an:

A-

I’ve got to say, Maybelline has really redeemed themselves in my eyes after the last mascara I reviewed.  This is some good stuff!

Since I like this so much, there’s a good chance you’ll be seeing it in some tutorials in the coming weeks.

Have you used this product?  What did you think of it?
