Beauty Review: L’Oreal Skin Genesis Pore Minimizing Gel Cleanser

Here’s a nice change of pace.  Rather than reviewing makeup, I’m reviewing a beauty product.  After all, makeup isn’t the only way we can keep ourselves beautiful.

Today, I’m reviewing L’Oreal Skin Genesis Pore Minimizing Gel Cleanser. I really needed some new face wash. I’d been using a cream cleanser and I was really yearning for something that could suds up.

I bought this product at Walgreens, but you can find it at most drug and department stores, as well as online.  The average price is $7.49 for an 8 ounce bottle.

Let’s see how well this product worked!

Is this good for sensitive skin?

I have very sensitive skin, so my experience is a good barometer for whether this will work for you.  The fragrance in the L’Oreal Skin Genesis Pore Minimizing Gel Cleanser is a tiny bit harsh.  It isn’t nearly as light as it could be. (It also reminds me of old ladies’ perfume.)

Still, it didn’t irritate my skin like I thought it would.  I felt perfectly fine once everything was washed off.  Because of this, this product works well for people with sensitive skin.

Does it really minimize pores?

If this does minimize pores, it doesn’t do it very well.  I couldn’t really see a difference before and after.  There may have been slight minimizing.  Then again, I don’t have very big pores to begin with.

If you’re only planning on buying the L’Oreal Skin Genesis cleanser for pore minimization, you’ll be disappointed.  I’ve never really seen proof that any product could make your pores smaller, and this is no exception.

How well does it take off eye makeup?

It says right on the bottle:

“Effectively & gently removes eye makeup”

I’ve used this a few times.  When I didn’t have that much eye makeup on, it took it all off like a pro.  When I had a lot of eye makeup on, it took off most of it.  Afterward, there still was some makeup residue.

In the end, it does work well most of the time. You may need to go back in with some dedicated eye makeup remover if you’re wearing a lot of waterproof mascara or eyeliner, though.

Does it leave any soapy residue?

Residue can be a big problem for some cleansers.  It seems like they leave more dirt on your face than what you started with.

Luckily, L’Oreal Skin Genesis Pore Minimizing Gel Cleanser works well for this.  It was light and clean.  When I rinsed off my face, all of the soap came with it.  It was very light and it didn’t leave any noticeable residue.

The fragrance, however, does leave a residue.  It isn’t light at all and smells like an old granny.  After I rinse off my face, I can still smell it for at least an hour.  Granted, if you like the granny smell, it may be a good thing.

The Final Verdict

After taking everything into account, I’ve come up with the perfect grade for this L’Oreal Skin Genesis Pore Minimizing Gel Cleanser review:

B –

While it did have some bad aspects, such as the fragrance and the lack of pore minimization, it was still a good product. It washed my face like a pro.

Have you used this beauty product?  What did you think?  Let me know in the comments!

  1. I keep seeing Penelope Cruz in ads 4 it. I mute commercials so I didnt know what she was saying.
Finally I didnt mute the commercial & saw the ads.
    I have blackheads.
In fact, 1 was beginning 2 sprout last night under my nose & is now visible. Despite washing it w saly acid last night & sleeping w clay mask under my nose, this AM a blackhead is there & it hurts!

I used ProActiv back in Spring 2k3 (IT WORKED WONDERFULLY) & I think I might have 2 go back 2 it. But Im tryna use other things that r easily available @ my local Target/CVS/Safeway/Giant. So I wanna try this Pore Minimizer Serum. U sayd B-. $8 isnt a big investment.

  2. You should definitely try it then, lilkunta. Since Proactiv is pretty pricey, why not try something inexpensive first? Definitely a good idea.

To see if it works for you, you should use the Pore Minimizer every day for a week. That’ll give you enough time to get a good impression of how it works.

    Good luck!

  3. thanks for reviewing this, i was curious about it.

To the first girl: Try Avon’s ClearSkin Immediate Response Acne Cleanser. It’s blue and has salicylic acid it to help fight acne. I’ve been using it for 2-3 months now and my skin has cleared up quite a bit. I barely break out now. It’s a bit drying, so you only need it like once a day or so, but I absolutely love it now.

They also have a ClearSkin exfoliating scrub too which I’ve used a few times (you only use it 1-2 times a week), and it’s fantastic for getting rid of blackheads (i have LOTS on my nose), and it does make my pores smaller after i use it.

My friend’s mom sells avon stuff so sometimes they have deals. The cleanser is only like $6.99 normally, but the last time they had a deal where it was 3 for $10!! So even if you buy it full price it’s not that expensive as the proactiv stuff.

  4. Thanks for the tips, Katie! That cleanser sounds awesome. I wonder if people without acne should avoid it, though, because of the salicylic acid? Probably. Because it’s so drying. That’s just a guess, though.

  5. I love this cleanser. I am at that annoying age where you have to worry about pimples and wrinkles. This cleanser completely cleared up my skin. I have tried many cleansers, and this one was light enough for my sensitive skin, but cleared up my pimples. I hate rubbing at my eyes with eye make up remover (fear of wrinkles) and I loved how this cleanser just cleaned it all away. My skin looked fresh and bright after using this cleanser. I highly recommend it, and don’t forget it takes 30 days before a new skin product will take full effect.

  6. I recently bought this product, and I LOVE it. If you use it consistantly every night and/or can begin to see minimization of pores. Your not going to see a HUGE difference…but being someone with relatively large pores….trust me theres a difference. I highly recommend the product. It leaves you with a refreshed smooth feeling. I love it.

  7. I’m a patron of L’Oreal products…but right now I’m confused because it seems that L’oreal is offering too many products that offer the same kind of work. Or maybe the packaging is different for every country/region? In all fairness. L’oreal products are good and they really work!

  8. This post is very helpful for me to select the right product.

  9. i r eally hate pimples, they can really ruin your day.-“*

  10. pimples are really annoying, you can kill them using benzoyl peroxide but it will also make your skin red.`”.

  11. I have used skin genesis before and I didn’t really care for it. It dried my face out majorly and didn’t get all of my make-up off.

  12. This is my very favorite face cleanser. However, my skin is insanely oily. It has totally changed my skin, for the better.

  13. I have been using this face wash now for about 1 year. I love it! I have fairly bad acne, with lots of drying of the skin from all the products I use to try and keep the acne down. I am one of those people that have about 12 face washes in the bathroom. and roughly 5 different on the spot acne creams or pore minimizers. Every time I went to the store I would spend a good half hour at least reading the labels on all the different face wash products, only to walk out with another new type that I had not tried before, I would be excited to try it and then let down by it about a week later. This is how I came across the Loreal skin genesis pore minimizing face wash… I love it! It does not over dry, it removes all the makeup, it does not leave behind that nasty somewhat sticky residue feeling. It lathers up nicely, and u can scrub it around your eyes and it does not burn! This product is an excellent value also, roughly 8 dollars and it lasts a couple of months. I always recommend this product to my friends, and family. It has changed my skin for the better, and now when I head to the store it is an automatic selection no more wondering if I am purchasing a product that is actually going to work and not dry my skin out. To sum this up. Go Buy It!! I will note that I have large pores and oily skin I have seen an improvement in both these issues, and now use the skin genesis re-smoother as well. It has only been a week for that, but so far so good! Good luck!

  14. My wife has been using lilkunta for 6 months. She looks much younger. I should try it to keep up!
    Thanks for your product
