What I Learned This Week 11-29-08 Hospital Edition

Although Thanksgiving was this week, I didn’t really celebrate it.  Instead, I’ve been spending all of my time at the hospital because of my brother’s and dad’s brain surgeries.

It feels like I live in the hospital!

Because of that, it seems like everything I’ve learned this week has been hospital related.  Here’s what I learned:

  • People really come out of the woodwork when you’re in the hospital.  My brother goes in for brain surgery and all of these people come to see him afterward.  Tons of friends and relatives, people he never suspected would come at all. It’s nice.
  • Hospital food isn’t so bad.  Like school lunch food, hospital food is often made fun of for being nearly inedible.  The food at the hospital my brother and dad are at is pretty darn good.  Granted, I am getting sick of eating it as it’s been over a week now, but it’s a lot better than I thought it would be.
  • There are great nurses and not-so-good nurses.  I’ve run into the full range of nurses while visiting at the hospital.  Some nurses are super attentive and nice and work to make the patient feel good.  Others really don’t give a care.  Let’s just hope to get a good nurse, shall we?
  • Brain surgeons are pretty anti-social.  It seems like the best surgeons really don’t like talking to people.  They’re not like Turk or The Todd from Scrubs.  That’s fine, though.  He doesn’t need to be a good talker as long as he’s super good at taking out brain tumors or clots.
  • Friends and family can be pretty awesome.  Besides coming out of the woodwork to visit hospital-bound people, friends and family are also offering all kinds of help to me and my mom, the non-hospital-bound people.  They offer help, support, food.  It’s nice how much people care.

That’s it.  I’ve learned a lot about hospitals.  That’s for sure.

What have you learned this week?
