Are Makeup Remover Wipes a Waste of Money?
In life, we want things to be easier and faster. Whether it’s food preparation, beauty blogs, or even makeup remover, society chooses convenience.
The big problem with convenience? Added price.
Though there are exceptions, makeup remover wipes are typically more expensive than a comparable bottle of the mascara-blasting formula. In that respect, you would think that makeup remover wipes are a waste of money.
But are they?
The Pros
As mentioned above, makeup remover wipes offer convenience. Just take one out of its pouch or box and rub it on your face. Tah-dah! Done! As opposed to free-standing bottled makeup remover, you don’t need to use anything else (like a cotton ball, for instance.) In that way, it saves a bit of money, although cotton balls are usually pretty cheap.
Makeup remover wipes are also really great for travel, especially on an airplane. If you’re flying in America, you have to keep any liquids at 3.4 ounces or under. That greatly limits your ability to take traditional eye makeup remover with you on your trip.
The Cons
Makeup remover wipes really are more expensive. Let’s take MAC Cosmetics as an example:
- MAC Pro Eye Makeup Remover 3.4 fl oz (travel!) for $18.00.
- MAC Wipes 45 sheets for $18.00.
At first glance, it looks the same, right? They are the same price after all. But let’s say that you would use a quarter teaspoon of Pro Eye Makeup Remover to take off your makeup. That would mean that you could use the bottled makeup remover about 80 times compared to the 45 times you’d get with MAC Wipes.
Plus, you can’t decide how much you are going to use when you use makeup remover wipes. If you have a very light makeup look, perhaps with just liner and mascara, you would waste a lot of that wipe to get rid of the makeup. Since it dries out, once you use it, you can’t use it again. With bottled makeup remover, you decide how much you need.
The Final Verdict
Although makeup remover wipes do cost more money when you compare the amount of times you can use them, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a waste of money. They’re a good choice for people who have a heavy hand with traditional makeup remover or for those that travel a lot.
If you can, buy in bulk. MAC Wipes come with a bulk version that’s $26 for 100 wipes, saving you some money.
Instead, it may be better to own both varieties. When you’re at home and you only need a little bit of makeup remover, use the liquid and a cotton ball. When you head out for a sleepover, a weekend getaway or are in a hurry, bring the wipes for easy makeup removal.

Indeed makeup removal wipes are more expensive so I don’t use them often (this is not main reason). I like to use them when I go on a short trip cause they are more handy and I also use them when I come home and I’m very tired to do all my makeup removal routine (this doesn’t happened very often also). It’s very convenient to keep them near your bed and just remove your makeup before you go to sleep.
Tavia: Putting them next to your bed is a very good idea. I never thought of that. But really, sometimes I just don’t want to bother going through the trouble of makeup removal. Having them there would help.
