Ultimate Beauty Day 1: Clean Out Your Makeup Stash

10DaysBanner Goal: Clear out the clutter and start fresh.

Welcome to the first day of 10 Days to Ultimate Beauty! Today you’ll go through your entire makeup collection to get rid of anything you don’t want or don’t need. You’ll also get rid of anything that’s empty or expired.

When you keep items that don’t work, your life is diminished, and so is your beauty. (Hoarders, anyone?) You should only keep beauty items that you like and that still work.  Once you’ve gotten rid of the stuff you don’t need, you’ll feel a lot better, I promise.

How to Clean Out Your Makeup Collection

Take out each item from your makeup collection and answer these questions:

  • Have I used this product in the past year? If NO, toss it.
  • Is there any makeup left in this product? If NO, toss it.
  • Do I like this beauty product? If NO, toss it.
  • Is this item expired? If YES, toss it.
  • Is this product dirty/broken/spilled? If YES, toss it.

You have two options for getting rid of makeup you don’t want.

If it’s dirty, used, expired, empty or broken, throw it away. It’s not worth saving.

If it’s still wrapped or never used, give it away. You can either give it to a friend or donate it to a local Salvation Army.

Assignment Day 1: Clean out your makeup stash as listed above.

Extra Credit: Organize your much smaller makeup collection using storage containers or shelves. I use plastic drawers I got at Wal-Mart. Organize by category so everything is easy to find. One drawer for mascara, one for liner, and one for lip gloss. You get the idea!

Let us know how this went for you in the comments! How much did you get rid of? Did you do the extra credit? Was it hard to part with some items, even if you don’t use them anymore?

  1. This was fun! Now I know what I have and can use. Now comes the hard part, getting my daughter to go through hers. Wish me luck. I didn’t use storage containers/shelves but I have similar products together in a few makeup cases. Since there isn’t too much left that worked for me.

  2. Great post! I go through my stash every few months and if I find something I don’t use or like, I give it away to friends or swap it (after I sanitized it, of course!). Love this series, can’t wait for more posts!

  3. Susan K: I’m glad you had fun! Hopefully your daughter will listen to reason and clean out her stash as well.

Honestly, it took me FOREVER to find a storage system even remotely good enough. And I still need to figure out how to store my lipstick. Argh!

Gio: Yay! Swaps are great. They’re a good way to try new brands that you wouldn’t normally go for. I hope you stay tuned!
