It was 10 years ago that this gorgeous talented women (who, at the time, was only a 16 year old girl), hit the stage at Australian Idol. All of Australia watched as Casey blew the judges and the nation away with her powerful voice. She became the youngest person to ever win Australian Idol and this year she is celebrating her ten year anniversary since winning with her ‘You Believed’ Tour.
StyleHunter.com.au writer, Erika Sepulveda, got the opportunity to interview this versatile, multi-talented, multi-Award winner & nominee, to ask her about her new book, her music and Casey Donovan’s 10 Year Anniversary Tour around Australia which kicked off on Friday the 23rd of May. So exciting!!!!!
What was the first song you remember hearing as a kid?
I think it may have been Hound Dog by Elvis! I was going to primary school and it came on the radio. It’s my clearest recollection of any one song at an early age that I have.
What is your all-time favourite song or album?
That’s a really tricky question to answer, Ummmm… if I had to pick a song it would be, “In The Arms of the Angels” by Sarah McLachlan. It’s such a beautiful song. The first time I heard it I stopped in my tracks and every time I hear it, it leaves me spellbound.
When did you know you wanted to be a singer?
I think when I was in High School, maybe 14. I joined a band, my first band ever, and was playing bass. It wasn’t long before I realised singing was more my thing.
Who has been an inspiration for you in music?
The radio (haha)! I am inspired by lots of people but to be honest the radio taught me everything I know. Different songs from different artists; Rage was also a big influence – loved seeing how video and music could work together!
Are there any artists you’d love to do a collaboration with?
I would have loved to have collaborated with Michael Jackson. He was the king of pop and just a wonderful performer. I loved all his music. My mother tells me I killed the VHS tape of ‘Thriller’ watching it over and over again!
When writing music, from what do you draw inspiration?
I get a lot of inspiration from everyday things and people. I’m a bit of people watcher – love seeing their interactions and movements, how they respond and react to each other.
What song has been the ‘deepest’ for you?
I think it would have to be one of the newest ones I have written called D.A.D.D.Y. The song title speaks for itself. I hope to release it very soon. It has a ‘country’ influence which is particular strange because I don’t do country. I am very proud of it.
Tell us about the tour and what you’re MOST looking forward to?
The ‘You Believed’ Tour is a celebration of the last 10 years and making my footprint into the music industry, I’m most looking forward to getting back on the road and giving people an awesome Unplugged version of me, up close and personal.
‘You Believed’ is a catalogue of songs that have made me the singer I am today – and its going to be so much fun to get out and perform again. I am very excited about this tour.
When you’re on tour, what is the hardest part about it all?
I think the hardest part is trying to get enough rest, When you’re a singer you have to take extra precautions to make sure you look after your instrument. Lots of rest, fluids and sleep!
How does it feel to have people asking to take photos with you all the time?
I think it’s a lovely gesture, I am all for my fans and people wanting to get a pic or just have a chat.
When you’re not performing on tour what are you doing in the ‘down time’?
I spend my time painting or going to see friends or doing something creative with my time…although I do love my sleep.
I heard you play the guitar? When did you learn and will you be giving us a show on this tour?
I sure do. I started playing when I was 14, on a 5 stringed guitar. I taught myself some chords and learnt from some family members and took it from there. There maybe a little bit of guitar playing, You’ll have to come along and see.

When you decided to write the book and share your story what was the idea or the outcome you wanted?
I wanted to tell my story, and I guess by telling my story I would be helping other people out in life; whether it was a similar story or the awkward in-between teen years. I never thought I would ever write a book or have anything interesting to say, but word after word it appeared I had achieved so much in life so far that I actually had a book by the end of it.
Writing this book took so much courage and strength, was there anyone in particular who helped you get through it when it got tough?
I had my close bunch of friends to help me out and also my manager and editor who were continuously on my ass about finishing it. But without the love and support and words of encouragement I’d still be writing it.
I could ask this amazing talent so many more questions as her career has really taken off into so many creative facets. Casey has performed in many musical theatres, she has acted, performed at runway shows and is currently hosting her own music program ‘Fusion’ which is in its second season on NITV/SBS, which highlights Indigenous talent. Casey will also be performing at ‘Pulp Fashion Week’ in Paris.
Casey lends her name and supports a number of charitable and non-profit organisations in her roles as Ambassador for APRA/AMCOS, Advocate for the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, advocate for National Indigenous Ear Health Campaign and as one of the founding members of the New South Wales Indigenous Chamber of Commerce.
