The Complicated and Surprising Adventures of Trisha and the Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream

My skin causes me trouble sometimes. I wander among the delicately scented, vibrant and feminine skin care products with a frown on my face. Why? Well, I can’t use these.

As my regulars no doubt already know, I have super sensitive skin when it comes to fragrance. If a perfumey fragrance comes near my face, whether in a lotion, soap or spritz of body spray, my face will usually break out in hives. It’s especially the case with skin care. (Cue Trisha’s sad face.)

It’s no good. While there are rare occasions where a scented item doesn’t give me a reaction, I haven’t been able to pinpoint exactly what ingredient does it. So, I continue to look longingly at the scented items on the shelves before picking up the “fragrance-free” alternative. While it doesn’t usually bother me, since perfume isn’t my thing anyway, I hate being limited like this.

“What does this have to do with Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream,” you ask?

Almost everything.

Where Trisha is Blasted With Fragrance

As a beauty blogger, I get my fair share of beauty products from companies for review. Aveeno is no exception. I opened up a package from them and was happy to see the Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream.

aveenoPRINC01I like thick night creams. They are my friend.

I ripped open the packaging, spun open the jar’s cap and…

was incredibly disappointed with the fragrance. These days, it’s pretty standard to have a face moisturizer fragrance-free. Or, at the very least, the fragrance should be natural-smelling and not perfumey.

With what I know of Aveeno, as well as all the “natural” you find on the packaging, I was surprised to find the intensive night cream perfumey. It’s not super strong, but strong enough to give me that sinking feeling.

“Uh oh,” I said to myself.

But, since I’m committed to my readers, I decided to try it anyway. I’m your personal Guinea pig! Don’t you feel fortunate?

Where Trisha Finds It Thin

Ya know how I said I like thick night creams? Well, thickness is definitely what I would expect from something called “intensive night cream.”

aveenoPRINC02Again, another disappointment.

When I scooped this moisturizer out of the jar, I found it as thin as a regular daytime moisturizer. Not thick at all.

Remember I’m a Guinea pig? I shrugged my shoulders and slathered this thinner-than-expected, totally-not-fragrance-free night cream on my face and crawled beneath my burgundy microfiber bed sheets. Off to dreamland for Trisha.

Where Trisha Wakes Up Pleasantly Surprised

There are times in your life where your expectations are totally wrong.

This was one of those times.

I woke up the next morning not covered in hives and dried out to the max like I expected. Instead, my skin was perfectly calm and super hydrated. Apparently, the Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin and still packs the moisture despite not being thick.

Color me surprised!

I’d like to say that I got up and did a little victory dance, but that would be a lie. I was far too tired for that kind of tomfoolery.

The Final Verdict

I guess in situations like these, it’s worth it to give something a shot. Still, I would have liked it better if there was no fragrance. There is a large number of people who don’t like fragrance or don’t want to be slathered in it while they sleep, and Aveeno is alienating these people. And, even though it didn’t irritate my skin, I didn’t find the perfume-y fragrance all that great anyway.

Also, while using it for weeks now, I haven’t noticed a difference in the brightness of my skin. In the end, though, I was pleasantly surprised with this and it exceeded my admittedly low expectations. For these reasons, I give the Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream a very unexpected…
