To waterproof or not to waterproof – that’s the question on everybody’s lashes.

Being a (self-proclaimed) lash addict, I know a thing or two about mascara. Having tried and tested them all, I know what works and I’m going to let you in on The Great Mascara Debate.

Iam not a big fan of waterproof mascara for everyday use; being waterproof it can suffocate your lashes and leave them brittle and stiff, and you can damage your own lashes quite easily trying to remove a waterproof mascara. I really like being able to wash away all my makeup with my cleanser so I tend to choose great long lasting products that are not waterproof for every day.

But if you just can’t remember not to rub your eyes, you have oily eyelids and rock the panda-eye way more often than not, and you’re a bit of a crier at special occasions, here’s the Pharmacy VS Department Store, Cheap VS Chic way to rock waterproofed lashes without loosing them!

  1. Curl baby curl!

Cheap: Manicure Eyelash Curler (right) $11.99 PricelineChic: Shu Uemura EyeLash Curler  $29.00 David Jones

Place your curler as close to your lash line as possible. Give it a test by applying a light amount of pressure before going for the full squeeze to make sure you don’t pinch your skin. Hold the squeeze for 5 seconds, then move a little further down your lash and squeeze again. Try to do this three times and move further along your lashes each time; this will ensure you get a long lasting gradual curl and not a horrible right-angled kink in your lashes

  1. Wave your wand

Cheap: LashBlast Volume Waterproof Mascara – Very Black $17.99 Priceline Chic: Lancôme Hypnose Waterproof Mascara – Noir 01 $54.00 David Jones

Remember to always wiggle your mascara wand into the base of your lashes and then comb out towards the ends of your lashes in one movement. This ensures you get as much of the mascara on each lash as you can, and enables you to define and separate each lash for optimum volume and length.

  1. Take it all off!

Cheap: Garnier Clean Sensitive 2-in-1 Waterproof Make Up Remover $9.99 Priceline Chic: Chanel Gentle Bi-Phase Eye Makeup Remover $49.00 available in-store exclusively

These makeup removers are bi-phase which means they are an oil based product floating over a water based product; you’ve got to shake them before you can use them! The oil component effortlessly breaks down waterproof mascara, eyeliner and long-wearing eyeshadows, and the water basted component hydrates, conditions and nourishes your skin and lashes.

Shake the bottle and dampen a cotton round with the remover. Hold it on your lids for a few seconds to allow the remover to begin the breaking down process and wipe away your waterproof makeup without damaging your skin or lashes, it’s as easy as that.

  1. Super Serum

Most people really don’t know the value of an amazing lash conditioner. If you’re serious about your lashes you’d be mad not to invest in one of these. Simply apply to your lash line like you would a liquid eyeliner after you cleanse your skin morning and night; you will be shocked at how well these products work. They condition your lashes, make them stronger longer and more durable. The results are noticeable and quick; it usually only takes 2-4 weeks before you can see the difference.
