The Beauty Edition of #ThingsIveNever

Recently, Charlotte from Lipglossiping wrote a post about the things she’s never done beauty-wise, despite being a successful beauty blogger.

When I read that, I thought of the things I haven’t done either, so I thought I’d get on the #ThingsIveNever bandwagon.

Thus, here are the 5 beauty-related #ThingsIveNever:

#ThingsIveNever1. I’ve never gone to a tanning salon.

That includes going there for the tanning bed (soooo bad for you) or for the spray tan (not bad for you.)

Why haven’t I gone? In the summer, I’m fine with having an uneven tan that of course made its way through layers of sunscreen. In fact, right now I have a very uneven tan from the halter-style sports bra I wear when I go running three times a week. It’s totally proof that I exercise!

In the winter, once my uneven summer tan has worn off, I’m nice and pale and totally fine with it.

Why go tanning? Beats me!

2. I’ve never worn lipstick on a regular basis.

I just can’t get into it, man. I try. And then…it just doesn’t happen.

I’ll keep trying, though!

3. I’ve never gone to a hair salon…in the last 15 years.

You read that right. I haven’t gotten my hair professionally cut, styled or dyed in the last 15 years. I do that all myself (yes, I cut my own hair). And I have a good reason.

A little over 15 years ago, I got a haircut that was so bad, I actually cried about it. And that’s saying a lot, since I’m generally not that emotional about hair.

See, at the time, the TV show Friends was super popular, and so was the “Rachel.” That was that weird layered haircut that Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel wore in the early seasons of the show. Of course, I wanted to be cool like everyone else, so I sauntered over to Great Clips (mistake #1) and asked for the Rachel (mistake #2.)

My stylist wasn’t so great, to put it kindly. I ended up with some piecey, terrible version of the Rachel, and cried and cried.

I don’t have photographic evidence of this terrible haircut, but here’s a dramatic reenactment:

Bad Rachel Haircut #ThingsIveNeverBut imagine the hair much worse and me crying alone in my bedroom, staring out the window forlornly as I often did as a teen.

After that I got one more haircut just to right that terrible wrong (but not at Great Clips, no sir) and then never trusted my hair in anyone else’s hands ever since.

4. I’ve never had plastic surgery.

And I never plan to, either! Aging is a part of life, and so is having good self-esteem (low self-esteem being one of the main reasons why women get plastic surgery in the first place). I may get some haters for saying that, but I accept the consequences.

5. I’ve never had my makeup done by a professional.

Doesn’t that seem totally wrong? You’d think at this point I would have had my makeup done at a MAC or Sephora or a beauty counter at a department store. But, nope. Not this gal.

I think it’s because I find the whole situation awkward. Do I tip them? Is it customary to buy everything they put on you once they’re done? Is it a faux pas if I don’t buy any of it? How do you even ask for a makeover? And what if I already have makeup on (which is totally likely)?

So many makeover questions! If you have answers, please help me out in the comments.

What are your #ThingsIveNever in the beauty world?

There must be things that you’ve never done, even if you’re a huge beauty fan. I’d love to hear about it in the comments section.

  1. I only got a makeover at an event. I had makeup on but they simply removed it. I really loved the result, and I always wanted to have more done, but until very recently, my local store didn’t offer this service. Now that it does I too am wondering whether I should tip the MUA or buy what she uses on me. I think it’s be appropriate to buy a little something but then it would depend on what they use, how much I like/need it, how much it costs…

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one confused about the etiquette! Hopefully someone super experienced with this (perhaps a MUA) will come in and let us know.

      *crosses fingers*

  2. I have never had my makeup done in a department store either. I’m not sure of the etiquette, i’m pretty sure they are on commission, so either a purchase or a tip would be in order. It would be fun to see how they would make me up, something I just might have to try.
Also, I think the ‘Rachel” looks cute on you.

    • Believe me, the Rachel in real life was NOT cute. You’ll just have to trust me on this one.

Good point on commission! They’re definitely on commission at department stores, but I wonder if that’s the case at Sephora…

  3. hahaha love this Trisha! I haven’t had my hair professionally cut in ages either. Just do it myself which never turns out that well oops >.<
