Face of the Day - 10/23/08 - Plum Smokey Eye

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Karen over at Makeup and Beauty Blog did a post recently with all sorts of video tutorials of how to do smokey eye makeup.  I have to admit, I’m not the best at it.  I’m trying, though!

So, that’s the point of my look for today.  I’m calling it Plum Smokey Eye for obvious reasons.  Of the tutorials at Makeup and Beauty Blog, I used the first one by MAC Pro Makeup Artist, Chantel Miller.

Here’s what I came up with:

Turned out pretty well!  At first, I didn’t like it much.  It could be smokier, but I think I was scared to go that extra mile.  What do you think?

Here’s some products I used to create today’s look:

I Want It!: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Ammo Shadow Box

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I love eye shadow pallets.  If it comes with more than four colors, I’m happy.

Well, one of the leaders in bright, bold makeup, Urban Decay, has an eye shadow pallet that’s killer.

It’s called the Eyeshadow Ammo Shadow Box and I want it!

In celebration of their 10th birthday, Urban Decay put together ten of their best eye shadow colors for this pallet.  You’ll find such colors as Oil Slick, Chopper, and Last Call.  This pallet sells for $34.00 on their website.

Why I want it:  Look at those colors!  I’m especially excited about Oil Slick and Shattered.  Nice.

How Cream Base Can Change Your Eye Shadow Look

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Did you know that you can completely change your look by first applying a cream base or primer?  It’s true.

This means that you can have one eye shadow routine look two different ways.

Here’s how you use the base:

  1. Find a good cream base or primer (more on this near the end of the post).
  2. Apply this first.  Put it on your lid wherever you plan on putting shadow.
  3. Apply your eye shadow look directly on top of the base.

Dare to Wear: Yellow Eye Shadow, Nail Polish

Monday, July 14th, 2008

At first thought, you may not even realize how much yellow makeup you really wear.  It may be some nice yellow/gold nail polish, or a yellow highlight on your lids.

In fact, yellow is used in a lot of makeup.  They add specks of yellow and gold to lipsticks, lotions, lip glosses, you name it.  But why is yellow so sought after?  It’s just a color, right?

As you may remember, I’ve been talking about color for the past few weeks and about how color effects mood and emotion.  I did red and green.  And now comes yellow.

Makeup Review: e.l.f. Brightening Eye Color Eye Shadow Quad

Friday, July 11th, 2008

elfshadow I normally don’t like to recommend things that I haven’t tried, especially if they seem questionable.  I came across a makeup website selling eye shadow for a dollar.  At first I was thrilled, and then I read some mixed reviews.

Then I actually found the eye shadow in a store (Big Lots) and bought it.  And now, of course, I will review it.

The eye shadow? e.l.f. Brightening Eye Color eye shadow quad in Nouveau Neutrals.  e.l.f. stands for “Eyes Lips Face”, which is usually what we’re making up with cosmetics.

I got this quad at Big Lots at a discounted price as part of a set (with eyeliner that I’ll review next week) so I got it cheaper than normal.  But you can find it on their website for $1.

Now, it’s time to get down to the real deets:

Dare to Wear: Green Eye Shadow, Nail Polish

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Last week, we talked about wearing the color red and how that can affect how others see you.  Color effects our emotions, whether we know it or not.

Green is going to have a lot different reaction than what you would get from red.  So, before you put on that green eye shadow or nail polish, you should learn more about the emotions associated with it.

Dare to Wear: Red Lipstick, Eye Shadow, Nail Polish

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Before you throw on that perfect shade of red lipstick, you may want to think about how you’ll be perceived.

Although you may not have consciously realized, color has a lot to do with how we feel.  When people see you wearing that red lipstick, red eye shadow, or even red nails, they will feel differently toward you.  They will get an emotional reaction based on that color.  Most of the time, they don’t even realize it.

I Took the Blue Eyes Challenge

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Christine over at Temptalia.com is having a Blue Eyes Challenge. Basically, she’s challenging everyone to get brave and wear blue eye makeup. After all, blue is one of the hardest colors to pull off. Many people avoid it all together.

Instead of avoiding blue, she encourages her readers to just go ahead and do it. After all, you can always wash it off if it doesn’t look good. Don’t be afraid of blue!

And, of course, I took the challenge.

You can visit her blog to see me and several others taking the challenge. You should try it, too! Although she posted our pictures, she’s still looking for brave souls for the rest of the month. Try it out!

Or at the very least, go over there are check it out.

Tutorial Tuesday: Glacial Dust Makeup Tutorial

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

I had two inspirations for today’s makeup tutorial. First, the inspiration for the name. If you’ve ever seen waters surrounding a glacier, you’ll know that it can be a really bright blue-green color. It’s amazing, like something you would see at the best ocean beaches in the world. At Glacier National Park in Montana, US, they have these waters. The water turns this color because of ‘glacial dust.’ This was the inspiration for the name of this look, as well as the general color scheme.

I also got inspiration for this look from Christine over at Temptalia. She uses MAC to get some amazing eye makeup looks, and lately she’s been doing makeup similar to what I’m going to do here.

The biggest difference is that I won’t be using MAC. Not that I don’t like it or anything. I just want to show that you can do very similar makeup techniques with many different makeup brands.

So, Read on to learn how to do this Glacial Dust makeup technique featuring blue and green shades of eye shadow. (more…)
